Essential patents

Essential patents are patent claims of an invention that must be used to comply with a video specification. A Standard body may require members to grant licenses to their patents that cover a standard that the organization is developing. Some Standards bodies form one or multiple license pools. MPEG2 and AVC essentials patents licensing terms served by MPEG LA with FRAND terms, this made those standards successful and dominating for decades. HEVC patent owners failed to agree and folded into 3 licensing pools and multiple companies did not join any of them. This situation keeps large uncertainties in HEVC price and slows down adoption.
