AVIF JPEG

JPEG, JPEG2000, PNG, AVIF, and HEIF are different containers and methods to code (compress) pictures or another word 1 frame.

JPEG - released in 1992 but still commonly used by the software, devices, and Internet.

JPEG2000 - implemented as a successor to the JPEG but still not popular because of the various technical factors. It uses discrete wavelet transform instead of discrete cosine transform (original JPEG).

PNG - portable network graphics initially released in 1996 as improved, non-patented replacement for GIF format.

AVIF - picture coding method which is fully compatible with HEIF container format. It uses intra-frame coding technologies from the royalty-free AV1 video codec. It is the latest picture format by the date of release in this list.

HEIF - picture coding method and container format. It uses intra-frame coding technologies from the HEVC video codec.
